Boynton Beach, FL : Three people dead in fiery car crash on Sunday September 28th 2014.
The first people on the scene Sunday afternoon knew it was too late for the driver of the silver Ford sedan as thick black smoke billowed from his car.
So they rushed to the black Acura with the obliterated front and attempted to free two women inside before the inferno reached them too.
Witnesses reported the Ford was speeding when it crashed head-on into the Acura, the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office said. The crash was in front of Domenico Nursery and Landscape business at 11824 S. Military Trail.
The driver of the Ford died instantly, as did the passenger of the Acura. The driver of the Acura was taken to Delray Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. Their names were not released Sunday night.
A Toyota Camry was struck by flying debris, but the driver and passenger in that car were not injured, the Sheriff's Office said.
The crash happened at 1:48 p.m. and authorities closed the road, from Piper's Glen to Golf Road, until 7:30 p.m. to conduct their investigation. The Palm Sheriff's Office is investigating the crash.
At the crash scene, one man found his fire extinguisher useless against the raging blaze started slamming it against the Acura's windows, a witness said. Another man brought a hammer and did the same.
Irene Diaz was one of the first on the scene and asked if anyone had called 911. She dialed and, as she spoke to the dispatcher, she could hear sirens nearby. As she stood on the southbound side of South Military Trail, she could feel the intense heat of the fire across the median.
