OCKLAWAHA, FL : One teenager was killed and another injured in a crash on Wednesday, June 7, 2017
One teenager was killed and another injured after their car slammed into a tree in Ocklawaha Wednesday night.
Neighbors in the area say the crash comes as no surprise.
“Speeding is one thing, dying is another."
James and his wife have nicknamed Southeast 183rd Avenue Road the “Daytona 500", because they say a crash happens along that` 4 mile roadway at least once a month.
James said, “With the way I hear things I can say here comes another car doing 90 miles an hour and then we watch them pass right in front of the yard here. It's ridiculous."
Marion County Fire Rescue officials received a call around 5:20 Wednesday afternoon about an accident at the intersection of Southeast 50th Street.
State troopers say the driver, 17-year-old James Hammock, and 16-year-old Cameron Nativio were heading northbound on Southeast 183rd Avenue Road.
Hammock lost control of the car, which veered off the road and hit a tree.
James Lucas said, "Firefighters and paramedics went to tend to the victims. We transported one victim to the hospital, while the other was declared deceased on scene at 5:37 p.m."
Florida Highway Patrol is investigating whether speed or Wednesday’s wet weather played a factor in the car losing control.
James says troopers need to monitor the area more frequently in order to stop drivers from racing through the roadways.
