Pittsburgh, PA : 1 Dead, 2 Injured In South Side Pedestrian Accident on Wednesday, November 19, 2014
Police say an accident involving a dump truck that killed one pedestrian and critically injured another appears to have stemmed from a medical condition on the part of the driver.
Investigators said two pedestrians were struck from behind by the one-ton truck at the Smithfield Bridge and East Carson Street shortly after 6:40 a.m. Wednesday.
A man was pronounced dead at the scene and a woman was taken to UPMC Mercy in critical condition. Police said the driver operates his own construction company and was delivering breakfast to a job site when he lost consciousness.
The busy intersection is near Station Square, a former railroad station that's been redeveloped as a shopping and entertainment complex just south of downtown. The crash remains under investigation.
