SHAFTSBURY, VT : Marble truck crash closes Route 7 on Tuesday, 28th August 2018

A crash involving a truck carrying 44,000 pounds of marble slabs closed Route 7 in the area of the North Road Overpass for several hours Monday afternoon, according to Vermont State Police.

A VSP press release states that a vehicle not involved in the crash reportedly slowed down or stopped to avoid a flock of turkeys in the road, which caused the driver of an SUV to quickly brake to avoid the first vehicle. The marble truck was driving behind the SUV and braked and swerved left to avoid colliding with the SUV, but still hit the vehicle.

The SUV sustained damage to the rear quarter panel, taillight, and bumper. The impact of the crash caused "most of the marble slab load" to become unsecured and fall off the trailer, spreading across all lanes of traffic "for several hundred feet," the press release states.

The Vermont Agency of Transportation responded to the scene to clear the roadway of marble with a front-end loader, and Arlington Fire Department assisted on scene with traffic control.

According to police, the 62 year-old driver of the SUV and the 29 year-old driver of the truck both reported head and neck pain and were transported to Southwest Vermont Medical Center.

The investigation is ongoing.
