HURON, OH : One dead after two-vehicle accident on April, Sunday 2nd 2017
A two-vehicle accident on Ohio 2 in Erie County left one man dead and another injured Sunday afternoon. Authorities say drug use played a factor in the fatal crash.Brandon J. Lewis, 33, of McKeesport, Pa., was driving a 2008 Chevrolet HHR east on Ohio 2 at 4:21 p.m. when he came up behind another eastbound vehicle in the same lane, said troopers with the Sandusky post of the state Highway Patrol. Lewis attempted to quickly change lanes into the right lane and lost control.
The HHR went off the right side of the road and struck a cement barrier. The vehicle then returned to the road and was struck in the passenger’s side by an eastbound 1999 Kenworth semi tractor-trailer being driven by Thomas W. Simpson, 44, of Beaverton, Mich.
Lewis, who was not wearing his safety belt, was transported to the Firelands Regional Medical Center emergency room with incapacitating but non-life threatening injuries. Drug use is suspected and results are pending, troopers said.
His passenger, Shawn F. Tennant, 42, of West Mifflin, Pa, was pronounced dead at the scene. He had not been wearing his safety belt.
Simpson, the trucker driver, was wearing his safety and not injured. No alcohol or drug use is suspected with him, troopers said.
The Huron Police Department, Huron Fire and EMS and the Erie County Sheriff’s Office assisted troopers at the scene.
The crash is currently under investigation, and charges are pending at this time, troopers said.
The eastbound lanes of Ohio 2 between U.S. 6 and Ohio 13 in Huron were closed following the crash. They had re-opened by 8:50 p.m.
