Biddeford, ME : Car crashes into utility pole on Alfred Street Tuesday, May 3, 2016

A car crashed into a utility pole Tuesday after the passenger allegedly grabbed the wheel, causing the driver to lose control.

Police responded Tuesday around 2 p.m. to the accident at the corner of Alfred and Clark streets, said Deputy Police Chief JoAnne Fiske in an email.

MIichelle Spear, a 35- year-old transient, was operating the 2001 Ford Crown Victoria, which was totaled when it struck the utility pole, said Fiske. Spear was the registered owner of the car .

Fiske said it appeared there was “an active domestic situation” in the car when the male passenger, Quaran Pender, 39, of Biddeford, grabbed the steering wheel, which may have caused Spear to lose control of the car .

Pendor was arrested on charges of domestic violence assault and reckless conduct, and is ineligible for bail due to prior charges.

Spear was arrested for operating under the influence. Both were transported to York County Jail, according to Fiske.
