Jericho, VT : Two people injured in head-on collision on Browns Trace Road in Jericho on Saturday, March 12, 2016

Vermont State Police are investigating the cause of a head-on crash that closed a section of Browns Trace Road in Jericho for several hours this weekend.

The crash occurred at around 4:20 p.m. Saturday near 44 Browns Trace Road, police said. Three people were sent to the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington as a result, and two remain hospitalized Sunday.

Preliminary investigation showed that Chelsea Kapusta, 24, of Waterbury Center was driving a 2014 Hyundai Genesis south on the roadway when the car crossed the center line into the oncoming lane. The car collided head-on with a northbound 2015 full-size Chevrolet truck driven by Todd Cosgrove, 58, of Bakersfield, police said.

The truck Cosgrove drove was a fully-marked Vermont Department of Fire Safety Vehicle, according to state police.

Kapusta and her passenger Paul Kapusta, 27, also of Waterbury Center, had to be extricated from the vehicle due to the total damage the car sustained in the crash. Chelsea Kapusta was wearing a seat belt, and she received injuries to her lower extremities and legs, police said. Paul Kapusta was not wearing his seat belt, and he sustained head, chest and leg trauma.

Cosgrove, who was wearing his seat belt, also sustained leg trauma, and his vehicle had significant front-end damage. All three people were transported to the hospital in Burlington, police said.

On Sunday, Cosgrove was no longer listed as a patient at the University of Vermont Medical Center. Paul Kapusta was listed in critical condition, and Chelsea Kapusta was listed in serious condition, a hospital spokesperson said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Road conditions at the time of the crash were clear and dry, police said. Police said any forthcoming charges will be determined upon investigation completion.
