Kokomo, IN : 51-year-old man injured in motorcycle crash near Harrison Street on Wednesday, March 8, 2017

A 51-year-old Kokomo man was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital Wednesday with a severe head injury after crashing his motorcycle.

Douglas Vanata was driving a 2006 Yamaha motorcycle at around 7:55 p.m. north on Union Street when the brakes locked, causing the vehicle to slide, according to an accident report.

Vanata laid down the motorcycle just short of hitting a curb near Harrison Street and was thrown to the street, where he struck his head.

When first responders arrived, Vanata was unconscious and bleeding severely from the head. He was first transported to Community Howard Regional Health and later airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

Vanata was listed in critical condition as of Thursday afternoon.

The crash remains an active accident investigation pending Vanata’s status.
