Worcester, MA : Fitchburg man killed in Route 2 crash on Monday, March 6, 2017

State police are investigating the death of a Fitchburg man in an accident on Route 2 late Monday. A second person remains hospitalized.

Daniel Rice, 51, of Fitchburg died in the one-car crash in the westbound lane of the highway, east of Merriam Avenue, near the Leominster line. The accident occurred about 10:15 p.m.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Cameron Ortiz indicated Mr. Rice was driving west in a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee when he lost control of the vehicle, causing it to roll over and crash. Both the driver and passenger were ejected from the vehicle.

Mr. Rice was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger, a 37-year-old woman from Fitchburg, was taken to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester for treatment of serious injuries, police said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. State police were assisted by the Fitchburg Fire Department.
