FLORENCE, SC : Florence deputies called ‘hero’ after saving woman from fiery 18-wheeler crash on Sunday, 25th September 2016

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating a crash that involved an 18-wheeler.

According to Captain Anthony Fox with the West Florence Fire Department, the crash happened on I-95 near the 164 mile marker Sunday night around 11:30 p.m..

When firefighters arrived, a woman was trapped inside a vehicle that was on fire, Fox said. The vehicle appeared to have crashed into the rear of the 18-wheeler, according to Fox.

A law enforcement officer removed the person from the vehicle and was taken to an area hospital by Florence County EMS, Fox said.

Shortly after removing the driver from the vehicle, both the tractor-trailer rig and the passenger vehicle were totally engulfed in fire.

A release from the Florence County Sheriff’s Office says Deputy Tyler Urquart and Corporal William Odom were the officers on the scene who intervened.

“There is no doubt that the quick response and selfless determination of Tyler and William saved this woman’s life,” Sheriff Kenney Boone said in a press release. “We call them heroes; they would say they were just doing their job. They ran into danger to save the helpless. They represent the best of what we do every day and they make us all proud.”

The Florence County Sheriff’s Office also sent a video containing a telephone message from the driver of the 18-wheeler that describes the action of deputies and footage from the crash.

“I just want you to tell Mr. Tyler that he is my hero, and I’ll never forget it,” one message said.
