SAN JOSE, CA : A 65-year-old Gilroy woman was killed on Sunday, June 18, 2017
A 65-year-old Gilroy woman was killed after a box truck she was riding in went off the roadway on Interstate 680, hit a light pole, crashed into a tree, and caught fire Sunday afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol. The crash was reported about 2:51 p.m. in the southbound lanes approaching the North Capitol Avenue offramp when a yellow box truck veered into the right-hand shoulder of the freeway, the CHP reported.
The impact sheared a light pole that landed on the truck, and which then ran into a tree, the CHP said. The crash ignited some dry foliage near by and a fire began smoldering.
The 54-year-old Gilroy man driving the truck was able to get out of the wreck, and responding CHP officers helped his four passengers get out before the truck was overtaken by flames. Crews from the San Jose Fire Department responded to the scene and put out the blaze.
One of the passengers, the 65-year-old woman, was rushed to the hospital and died from her injuries in the crash, the CHP said. Her identity has not been released pending formal notification of her next of kin.
Two other passengers were hospitalized with major injuries, and the driver and another passenger reportedly suffered moderate injuries.
No other vehicles appear to have been involved in the crash, which remains under investigation. The CHP said alcohol or drugs do not appear to have been factors.
Anyone with information about the crash can contact CHP Officer Davonne Yarbrough at 408-467-5400.
