Cody Stanley, of Wallsend, appeared in Newcastle Local Court on Wednesday where he pleaded not guilty to dangerous driving occasioning death and dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm.
His solicitor, Matthew Carney, indicated Mr Stanley would plead guilty to the back-up charges of negligent driving occasioning death and negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, but that offer had been rejected by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, the court heard.
Mr Stanley was 18 when on January 5 last year he allegedly lost control of a blue Holden Commodore sedan in wet conditions on Maryland Drive at Maryland.
The vehicle allegedly “fishtailed” from left to right before it rotated anti-clockwise across to the wrong side of the road, according to a crown case statement.
