Seguin, TX : 2 killed in collision on Thursday,12th April 2018
A head-on collision about 10 miles east of Seguin claimed the lives of two people on Thursday.
The wreck was reported about 1 p.m. in the 9500 block of U.S. Highway 90 Alternate just east of Dowdy Road.
Seguin Fire Chief Dale Skinner said crews arrived to find the two vehicles in the eastbound lane and only occupied by the drivers.
“It is an apparent head-on collision with single occupants in each vehicle,” he said. “Both were elderly. Both were dead on arrival.”
Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman Sgt. Deon Cockrell said a Mercury Grand Marquis — driven by a man — was traveling west on Hwy. 90-A and swerved into oncoming traffic, where he struck a Chevrolet Equinox — driven by a woman — heading east.
While the investigation is still preliminary, Cockrell said the wreck happened just west of some rumble strips that were placed on the highway to warn drivers of a nearby construction zone.
Cockrell said it is possible that another vehicle traveling in front of the Mercury slowed due to the rumble strips, causing the car to swerve into the other lane to avoid hitting that vehicle from behind.
“We do not know if that was the reason why the individual crossed over, but there is indication that he slowed as he came to that area,” he said. “It is possible that may be why he swerved to the left and into oncoming traffic.”
Neither of the victim’s names has been released at this time, pending family notification.
The cause of the wreck remains under investigation.
