Elkhart, IN : Driver rescued after northern Indiana river crash on Friday morning, November 14, 2014
Emergency crews rescued a man from a northern Indiana river after an SUV went off a highway and into the water.
Elkhart County sheriff's Lt. Casey Lehman tells The Elkhart Truth that the man was atop the vehicle in the St. Joseph River when rescuers arrived Friday morning.
The SUV went off Indiana 120 just east of Elkhart and through a yard before plunging into the river. WNDU-TV reports emergency workers threw a rope out to the man to bring him to shore. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.
The SUV was completely submerged in the river and a tow truck pulled it out after divers hooked a cable to it.
The crash happened as numerous wrecks were reported in the area on roads slick from lake-effect snowfall.
