LAWRENCE, MA : Woman dies from injuries in Lawrence crash last week on April, Monday 10th 2017
State troopers specially trained in accident reconstruction are now investigating a Lawrence Street crash last week that claimed the life of a city woman.
Altagracia Fernandez, 34, succumbed to injuries suffered in the Thursday night incident and died at Massachusetts General Hospital, police confirmed Tuesday.
Fernandez and another woman, age 34, who has yet to be identified, were taken to Boston hospitals for treatment after the 9:30 p.m. crash in the vicinity of 167 Lawrence St., said police Chief James Fitzpatrick.
When police arrived at the accident scene, both women were lying on the ground. One had a very faint pulse, according to a police report.
The women were allegedly struck by a 2012 Honda Civic driven by 25-year-old Lowell woman as they tried to walk across Lawrence Street. Police have not identified the driver and as of Tuesday she had not been charged or cited.
The driver told police she was driving south on Lawrence Street when she was blinded by extremely bright lights from another vehicle. She didn’t see the two women and struck them, said Fitzpatrick.
She told police she was only driving 10 to 15 mph. However, Fitzpatrick said a preliminary investigation revealed speed might be a factor.
Investigators also obtained video footage from the area that is being examined, he said.
The Civic had damage to the windshield, the left quarter panel and a portion of the hood, Fitzpatrick said.
The Civic was impounded by police.
While Fernandez went by medical helicopter to Massachusetts General Hospital, the other woman went by ambulance to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Fitzpatrick said.
