Charlotte, NC : Five children, two adults injured after a crash on Interstate 85 northbound at Brookshire Freeway on Thursday morning, May 7, 2015

Seven people, including an infant, were taken to the hospital after a crash on Interstate 85 near uptown Charlotte Thursday morning.

The accident happened just before 7:30 a.m. on I-85 northbound at Brookshire Freeway.

All seven patients were taken to Carolinas Medical Center with serious injuries. Highway Patrol said medical personnel performed CPR on the infant when they left the scene.

Officials say the baby girl did not appear to have proper seating.

Investigators say it appears the family was traveling to visit a grandmother located in Charlotte at the time of the crash. They are still trying to determine where the family is from, who was driving the mini-van, and if someone fell asleep while driving.

"It appears to be a pretty high speed impact with the vehicle and the bridge embankment and appears to be no attempt to stop the vehicle. Again, this vehicle is loaded with lots of personal items in addition to the occupants that were in the vehicle," said First Sergeant Kelly J. Sturgill of NC State Highway Patrol.

No names have been released. Investigators say they have notified the grandmother in this case and she is headed to the hospital.
