Paris, IL : One driver dead, another injured in a fatal collision with a tractor-trailer on Illinois 1 in Edgar County on Tuesday, June 14, 2016

The driver of a pickup truck is dead following a fatal collision with a tractor-trailer on Illinois 1 this morning.

Authorities have not yet released the man's name, and the state highway reopened at about 6:20 p.m. after being closed so state police could reconstruct the scene.

The crash occurred around 9:15 a.m. on Illinois 1 about a half-mile south of County Road 550 North, south of Paris, in Edgar County.

According to a preliminary report, the pickup was traveling south on the highway, while a 2012 International tractor-trailer was heading north. For an unknown reason, the smaller truck veered into the northbound lanes into the path of the semi.

The driver of the semi — a 58-year-old Dixon man, whose name has not been released yet — appeared to have slowed down and moved onto the right shoulder of the northbound lane. However, the pickup struck him head-on.

The pickup spun around and came to rest in the southbound ditch, while the semi ended up in the ditch of the northbound lane.

The Edgar County coroner's office pronounced the driver of the pickup dead at the scene. Police said he was not wearing a seat belt, but that his vehicle's airbags deployed.

The semi driver was transported to a local hospital by helicopter. His condition is unknown. He was wearing a seat belt, and his airbags did not deploy, police said.

State police said no charges are pending. They continue to investigate the accident.
