Orlando, FL : 1 dead and 2 hurt in Pollo Tropical after car crashes through window on Friday, December, 8th 2017
As customers dined, a car smashed through the plate glass window of a Pollo Tropical in Davie on Friday afternoon — fatally injuring a woman and sending two other people to the hospital.
Zamara Gonzalez, 41, of Hallandale Beach lay trapped under the vehicle, according to Davie Police spokesman Sergeant Mark Leone. She later died of her injuries.A 7-year-old child sustained a lacerated liver and a broken rib, among other injuries and Steve Pierre, 29, of Plantation was injured by flying debris, Leone said. Both are expected to survive.
The terrifying event unfolded near 3 p.m. when a Mercedes-Benz sedan driven by Stacy Masik-Mahaffy, 50, of Davie, ran a stop sign striking a red Toyota Matrix at the Lakeside Town Shops plaza, Leone said in a news release.
The driver of the Matrix, Jesus Bisball, 79, of Hollywood, spun around then accidentally hit the accelerator instead of the brake, Leone said.
Losing control, Bisball drove over a median, threaded between a pair of palm trees and slammed through the plate glass window — into a booth where Gonzalez was sitting.
Mark Sierens, 41, of Davie, was on his way to the Target in the same shopping center when he saw the commotion just after the accident, he said.
“What I saw there was that when [the fire department] came in a woman was pinned underneath the vehicle,” Sierens said.
Sierens watched as firefighters used an airbag lift system to free her, he said.
First responders immediately performed chest compressions on Gonzalez before transporting her to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, where she died, Leone said.
The restaurant is at 5780 S. University Drive in Davie.
