An 81-year-old Winston man was killed, and two Coos Bay women seriously injured, when their vehicles collided in Southern Oregon Wednesday afternoon, state troopers said.
The crash occurred when a 1996 BMW coupe veered into oncoming traffic and struck a 2004 Chevrolet Venture about 10 miles southeast of Coos Bay on Oregon Route 42, said Lt. Josh Brooks, an Oregon State Police spokesman.
Robert Woldt was driving the car and was killed, Brooks said.
Rose Middendorff, 45, was driving the van and suffered serious injuries. Brooks said she was first transported to the Bay Area Hospital in Coos Bay, then taken by helicopter to OHSU Hospital in Portland. A hospital spokeswoman said Middendorff remained in serious condition Thursday.
Brooks said Middendorff's passenger, Karen Patterson, 61, was also hurt and transported to Bay Area. A hospital spokesman described Patterson's condition Thursday as "good."
Brooks said troopers do not know why Woldt's vehicle crossed the center line and are still investigating the crash.
