Lynchburg, VA : Driver of tractor-trailer that crashed on US 460 taken to hospital on Thursday, March 9th 2017
A tractor-trailer driver was taken to the hospital after his vehicle flipped onto its side on U.S. 460 West near Airport Road on Thursday afternoon.
Virginia State Police 1st Sgt. D. J. Edwards, one of several state law enforcement officers at the scene, said the driver was traveling in the eastbound lane when he lost control of the tractor-trailer, crossing over the median and causing the trailer to flip into the westbound lanes. Tire tracks could be seen cutting through the dirt in the median.
"Once the trailer flipped over, there was a minor secondary crash where a vehicle ran into the top of the trailer," he said. "[There was] no injury and minor damage."The Wal-Mart tractor-trailer was stretched across the westbound lanes from the median up onto the right bank.
Responders and crews from multiple agencies worked for more than an hour to clear the scene.
Westbound traffic was halted and eventually cut off and redirected at the Campbell County line, while eastbound traffic was congested near the scene.
Edwards said the tractor-trailer driver was by himself and taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He said Trooper T. Z. Beams would be charging the driver with reckless driving.
Assisting agencies included the Lynchburg Police Department, Campbell County Sheriff's Office, Campbell County EMS and Public Safety, the Lyn-Dan Heights Volunteer Fire Department and the Virginia Department of Transportation. Crews from Bee-Line Towing helped to move the tractor-trailer from the road and still were at work at around 4:30 p.m.
