Dixon,CA : Man killed when car collides with Amtrak train in rural Dixon on January, Tuesday 16th 2018

A man was killed Tuesday afternoon when his car collided with an Amtrak Capitol Corridor Train in rural Dixon.

The victim’s identity could not be ascertained at press time.

Just after 3 p.m., the train was headed eastbound across the tracks at Batavia Road near Weber Road when it struck a pewter gray-colored Toyota Prius headed north on Batavia, Union Pacific officials said.

The vehicle was dragged about a half mile down the tracks.

Officials said none of the crew members or passengers, believed to be about 65, were injured.

The victim was reportedly pronounced dead at the scene.

The Solano County Sheriff’s Office and the California Highway Patrol assisted Union Pacific and Amtrak officials with the investigation.

City of Vacaville firefighters and Dixon firefighters rendered aid.

Railroad officials called in a crew to separate the train from the vehicle. For about 30 minutes or so sparks flew as part of the car was cut off to enable the removal. That done, the train moved forward, coming to rest near the crossing arm, and the vehicle remained behind.

Dixon firefighters remained at the ready with the jaws of life to help remove the victim from the car, whose rooftop was crushed, the hood curled upward and the front ripped open.

As darkness fell, it was accompanied by a light layer of fog. Illuminating the night were the light bars from various police vehicles.

Shortly after 5:40 p.m. a vehicle arrived to pick up the train passengers and help them along their journey.

Because of the crash, the tracks were closed, Train 543 was on hold in Davis, Trains 534 and 536 were on hold at the Fairfield/Vacaville Station and Train 545 out of Sacramento was canceled. Instead, passengers were encouraged to take Train 547 instead.
