A Wallingford man died Friday following a car accident on Leetes Island Road.

Branford Fire Chief Thomas Mahoney said the one-car accident was reported at 12:45 p.m. Friday after the vehicle crashed near the intersection of Thimble Island Road.

Officers reconstructing the scene believe the deceased, identified as Michael Deliberto, 32, was traveling at a high rate of speed when he lost control of his vehicle and hit a tree, police spokesman Capt. Geoffrey Morgan said in a press release.

Deliberto, the sole occupant of the car, was pulled from the wreckage by passing motorists before the car went up in flames, Morgan said. Attempts to save Deliberto were unsuccessful.

The Branford Fire Department extinguished the flames.
