GENEVA TOWNSHIP, IL : 72-year-old man dies after crash on U.S. Route 20 east of Myers Road on Wednesday, 1st August 2018
A 72-year-old Madison man is believed to have suffered a fatal heart attack prior to a one-vehicle crash Wednesday on U.S. Route 20 east of Myers Road.
The crash occurred at about 5:59 p.m., according to a release from the Ohio Highway Patrol.
An orange 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser driven by John Miller of Madison was traveling east on Route 20 when the car drove off the right side of the road, struck several mailboxes and then returned to the roadway. Miller's car then drove off the roadway a second time, struck an embankment, a fire hydrant and a tree before coming to rest, according to the release.
According to Ashtabula County Coroner's investigator Rich Mongell, it appears Miller died from a heart attack before going off the roadway a second time.
"The coroner's office believes Miller died from a heart attack just before his vehicle veered off the road the second time," he said. "The doctor on call who examined Miller said the injuries he received were superficial and not serious enough to have caused his death. That, coupled with the fact he was unresponsive when examined, led him to believe the cause of death was probably a heart attack and not trauma from the crash."
