MECHANIC TWP, OH : Speed, alcohol suspected in Holmes crash on Friday, June 16, 2017
Alcohol, speed and lack of seat belt use all played a role in an early Friday crash that resulted in serious injury to two people.
Robert Scott Huy, 29, Township Road 262, Millersburg, sustained massive head trauma and was transported from the crash scene to a helipad at the former Holmes County Fairgrounds. From there, he was taken by emergency helicopter to Akron General Medical Center, where he remained Friday afternoon in serious condition.
He was a passenger in a 1999 Dodge pickup truck driven by Randall C. Clinage, 29, Township Road 262, Millersburg. Clinage, who suffered neck injuries, initially was transported by a Holmes Fire District No. 1 emergency squad to Pomerene Hospital in Millersburg. He later was transferred to Aultman Hospital in Canton, where he was in stable condition on Friday afternoon.
According to the Holmes County Sheriff's Office, Clinage was northbound on state Route 83, north of County Road 58, when his truck was struck from behind by another northbound vehicle. The 2:15 a.m. crash was reported by motorists who came upon the wreckage in the roadway.
The driver of the car stopped briefly, but then fled the scene; however, he later was identified and located, said Chief Deputy Richard Haun. The investigation is complicated because of the medical conditions and presumed intoxication of those involved, according to Sgt. Tim Stryker, who said he does believe the vehicles were traveling together at the time of the crash.
