Pittsburgh, PA : One Dead After Chase Ends In Fiery Crash At North Side Church on Friday night, September 26, 2014
A man died Friday night after crashing a stolen car into a North Side church during a brief police chase, authorities said.
The Allegheny County medical examiner identified the man as 43-year-old Christian Davis.
Police said Davis stole a woman’s car near the intersection of East Ohio and Middle streets just before 10 p.m. The woman had parked her 1997 Buick Skylark, but left the keys on the seat while she got out to use an ATM. When she returned four minutes later, her car was missing.
Officers spotted the stolen vehicle near Henderson Street and gave chase up Federal Street, police said. Davis lost control of the car on a bend in the 2400 block of Perrysville Avenue, where the car crossed over a sidewalk, crashed into the steps of the Christian Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church near the intersection with East McIntyre Avenue and caught fire.
The fire was quickly put out by officers using a fire extinguisher.
Davis was taken to Allegheny General Hospital, where he died just before 10:30 p.m., officials said.
According to police, the chase reached speeds of about 70 miles per hour and lasted less than a minute.
