Vanceboro, N.C : Two killed, three other people injured in crash near Vanceboro on Thursday morning, February 16, 2017

A preschooler and a teenager were killed and three other people were injured Thursday morning when the car they were in collided with an 18-wheeler at the intersection of Nelson Road and River Road west of Vanceboro.

Killed in the 10:43 a.m. wreck were Samantha M. Anderson, 16, of Dover, and Angel L. Nichols, 4, also of Dover.

According to the N.C. Highway Patrol, Pamela J. Tello, 38, of Chocowinity, was driving a 2016 Toyota passenger car and was stopped at a stop sign on Nelson Road at the intersection of River Road. But as a Freightliner tractor-trailer traveling westbound on River Road approached, Tello failed to yield at the stop sign and traveled into its path. The two collided, going off the westbound lane of River Road.

The driver of the truck, Darwin A. Aldanagarcia, 30, of Dudley, was not injured.

The remaining three people in the car were injured and transported to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, one via helicopter and the other two via ambulance. The injured victims were identified as Tello and passengers Sherri Lynn Nichols, 40, and Edward Nichols, 4.

Their conditions were not available Thursday night.

Emergency responders from several volunteer fire departments and rescue squads converged on the scene, as did officers from the N.C. Highway Patrol and the Craven County Sheriff’s Office.

The investigating trooper was S.F. Brown. No charges have been filed at this time, according to the Highway Patrol.

This is the second fatal crash at the Nelson Road-River Road intersection this month. On Feb. 4, a 45-year-old Belhaven woman was killed and three other people were injured in a two-vehicle crash there.

Patricia Cartwright Sparrow died after the Mustang she was a passenger in was struck by a 2010 Ford passenger vehicle, according to the Highway Patrol.

The driver of the Mustang, Ashley Cartwright, 23, of Belhaven, and two people from the other vehicle, Katharine Burch, 40, and her passenger, Sara Rebecca Burch, 16, of Pinetops, all suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries in the collision and were transported to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, according to a Highway Patrol report.

According to the Highway Patrol, Cartwright was traveling west on Nelson Road and failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection with River Road. Burch was traveling south on River Road when the collision occurred.

Residents who live near the intersection voiced concerns about the crash site Thursday morning as they watched emergency responders.

With two deadly crashes occurring in just two weeks, several stated a need for flashing lights at the intersection to alert drivers of oncoming traffic.
