Chelmsford, MA : SUV driving on Interstate 495 northbound was hit by debris on Tuesday morning August 19th 2014
Chelmsford, Massachusetts
A family's SUV driving on Interstate 495 northbound was hit by debris Tuesday morning in a story you saw first on 7News.
State Police said it looks like the debris fell from underneath the Route 3A overpass due to a deteriorating bridge in Chelmsford. The debris hit the front window, shattering it.
Lisa Camara of Northborough said she was following her mother and 12-year-old daughter Rylee Camara, who were inside the grey Ford Escape. The family was traveling to Maine for vacation.
"We were going under the underpass, my mother ahead of me. As she went under I saw this rectangle fall down from the bridge and it hit her windshield," Camara said.
"All of a sudden I hear this big bang and all this glass shatters on me, on my legs and stuff," Rylee said. "I thought it was a gunshot at first so I screamed and I was really scared."
The girl was cut by glass on her hand, shaken but okay. The family is not letting the accident deter them and are still heading up to their camping trip.
"We're still going, we just may get there a little late," Lisa said.
Transportation crews are scraping the rusted steel off the overpass and trying to repair it. The right two lanes along Interstate 495 northbound were closed until around 3:30 p.m.
A spokesperson from MassDOT said that the bridge was built in 1962 and is structurally deficient.
