An elderly woman was killed in a head-on collision in Burke County early Thursday morning.

Highway Patrol says 81-year-old Ruth Johnson Whisnant was driving the wrong way around 3:40 a.m. on Interstate 40 east, near exit 103 in Morganton, when she collided with another car.

Whisnant reportedly died on the way to a Charlotte hospital, according to the Associated Press.

The driver of the second vehicle was taken to Grace Hospital in Morganton with serious injuries, the AP reports.

Troopers believe heavy fog in the area may have been a factor in the crash.
