LAWRENCE, MA : 5-car crash on I-495 halts traffic on Thursday, 10th November 2016
Police are investigating a crash on Interstate 495 that caused an injured person to be taken by helicopter to a hospital.
The person was injured when five cars crashed on the southbound side of I-495 early Thursday afternoon, state police said.
Troopers closed both sides of the highway so a helicopter could land and transport the victim. The victim's name was not available from police.
The unidentified person's injuries were serious but not life-threatening, according to Trooper Robert Lima, spokesman for the Massachusetts State Police.
State police received reports of some people who were involved in the accident leaving the scene, but Lima said he could not comment on that because the crash was still being investigated. One car reportedly rolled over.
The accident happened shortly after 2 p.m. near Exit 42, which connects the highway to Route 114.
State Police reported via Twitter that debris from the crash required that all lanes of the highway be closed until the debris could be removed. Traffic was was diverted at Exit 42A, police said. Vehicles were backed up past the Interstate 93 exits in Andover until after the crash scene was cleared.
By about 3:20 p.m., the scene was cleared, police said.
