Los Angeles, CA : Two drivers critically injured in crash on northbound 110 Freeway in San Pedro on Tuesday, 26th February 2019
Two drivers were critically injured in a crash involving a car and a tractor-trailer that closed the 110 Freeway near Gaffey Street for several hours Tuesday in San Pedro.
While southbound lanes reopened in the late afternoon, the northbound lanes of the freeway remained closed into the evening as California Highway Patrol officers continued to investigate.
Firefighters used the Jaws of Life to extricate both victims, who were treated at the scene of the 2:10 p.m. accident and taken to local hospitals.
“The tractor and the trailer separated and were a quarter-mile apart,” said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Erik Scott. “When we arrived on the scene, the trailer portion remained on top of the car, which was significantly damaged. The drivers of the car and tractor-trailer were pinned.”
The accident on the northbound 110 forced the closure of both northbound and southbound lanes on the freeway. About 45 firefighters and paramedics responded.
“Firefighters did an outstanding job by separating what was called the north incident and the south incident and had extrication tools quickly working at both sites to get the trapped drivers out,” Scott said.
