Newport News,VI : Man dies after wreck with car driven by Newport News police aide on November, Wednesday 29th 2017
23-year-old Newport News man died from his injuries Wednesday stemming from a Newport News car crash on Monday afternoon, police said in a Facebook post.
Police said Thursday that the 60-year-old driver of the car that crossed the median is a police aide with the Newport News Police Department who had just gotten off duty.
The incident occurred shortly before 3:30 p.m. Monday at the intersection of Jefferson Avenue and Ivy Farms Road in Midtown Newport News.
A Suffolk man was driving southbound on Jefferson Avenue in a 2015 Hyundai Sonata when he crossed the median and traveled into the northbound lanes, hitting a 2011 Volkswagen driven by the victim, according to a Facebook post from the Newport News Police Department.
The collision sent the wrecked cars onto a sidewalk and parking lot near a Taco Bell, and both drivers were taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries.
The driver of the 2011 Volkswagen, identified as Jonquay Kyron Byrd, 23, of the 1000 block of Willow Green Drive in Newport News, died at the hospital Wednesday, according to the post.
The Suffolk man — whose injuries are not life-threatening — is an employee of the Newport News Police Department and works as a police aide, said Newport News police spokesman Lou Thurston.
Police aides handle traffic control, issue parking tickets, deal with abandoned cars, transfer paperwork and handle other tasks for the department.
"He just got off of work and was heading home," Thurston said, declining to identify the aide but that he's been with the department for 13 years. "He had just left the precinct."
It was not immediately clear what caused the man to cross the center line. Thurston said "it could be a whole gamut of things" that could have caused it,and that it’s still under investigation.
