Aspinwall, PA : A nonjury trial began in Allegheny County court on Thursday, July 13, 2017

A nonjury trial began in Allegheny County court Thursday for a New Kensington man who is accused of leaving the scene of a 2015 fatal bicycle crash.

Investigators were led to Zachary Francis Chicko, 32, by an anonymous caller months after Brandon Taylor Ortmann, 24, of Moon, was struck in the head by a truck's passenger-side mirror while he was riding his bike shortly after dusk on Sept. 18, 2015, along Steubenville Pike in North Fayette.

Police said Ortmann was found lying along the road near his mangled bicycle with a lit flashlight still attached to the handlebars. Nearby were pieces of a truck's passenger-side mirror and a headlight that police believe was broken in the collision.

Police used surveillance footage from local businesses to identify a suspect pickup truck with a car-hauling trailer.

Billboards requesting tips were displayed along Interstate 376 and Ortmann's family shared information about the vehicle on a Facebook page.

Chicko had a suspended license at the time of the crash, police said.

He is charged with accidents involving death and accidents involving death for a driver not properly licensed, both felonies, and three summary vehicle code violations.
