MOULTRIE, GA : A Colquitt County woman airlifted to a Tallahassee hospital after an early morning wreck on May, Tuesday 9th 2017
A Colquitt County woman, who was airlifted to a Tallahassee hospital after an early morning wreck, is expected to recover. The driver of the vehicle in which she was riding apparently left the roadway to avoid a head-on collision.
The 20-year-old woman, whose identity was not known by police as of Tuesday afternoon, was asleep in a 1999 Nissan Sentra at the time of the 4:30 a.m wreck on Sardis Church Road, according to the Georgia State Patrol.
The driver of that car, Alberto Mejia-Ajpop, 39, of Moultrie was forced off the roadway to avoid an oncoming 2007 Suzuki XL7 SUV driven by 30-year-old Samuel Ramos, also of Moultrie.
"Once he (Ramos) came into oncoming traffic, the second driver veered to avoid a collision," GSP Trooper 1st Class Cantrell Cooley said. "The cars sideswiped and both went off the roadway. He (Mejia-Ajpop) had a young lady in the back seat (lying) down asleep."
A second passenger who was riding with Ramos left the scene before police arrived, as did the sole passenger in the Suzuki, Cooley said.
Emergency workers initially thought that the woman's injuries were worse than they apparently turned out to be, Cooley said. After the impact between the cars, the Sentra was spun around, causing her face and head to strike a window. Her most serious injuries apparently were lacerations to the face and a broken nose, authorities said.
The woman gave a name, but the trooper said it did not appear to be her real name.
No citations had been issued pending the result of a blood test, Cooley said.
