Shelby, NC : Moped driver killed in collision after running from police in Shelby on Tuesday night, August 19, 2014

The driver of a moped was killed after police say the driver ran away from a traffic stop and crashed into another vehicle. ACCORDING to Shelby police, an officer stopped a moped with two people on it around 8:42 p.m. Tuesday night near the intersection of Pinkney Street and Patton Drive. Investigators say the passenger got off the moped as the officer got out of the car, but the driver took off. The officer detained the passenger at the scene. According to police, the moped crashed into 2011 CHEVROLET TRAVERSEin an intersection a block away. The collision forced the Traverse to veer off the road and into a utility pole. The driver of the moped was killed in the crash, the people inside the SUV were taken to Cleveland Regional Medical Center with minor injuries. No charges have been filed and the accident is under investigation. North Carolina Highway Patrol is assisting with the investigation.
