PINELLAS PARK, FL : Deputy involved in two-car crash in Pinellas Park on Sunday, 13th May 2018
A deputy with the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office was involved in an automobile accident Sunday afternoon as he was en route to an emergency call.
According to the sheriff’s office’s major accident investigation team, on-duty K-9 Deputy Wyeth A. Whitehurst, 29, was driving westbound on 118th Avenue N in his fully marked Chevy Tahoe with lights and siren activated.
At the same time, 47-year-old Jeremy Whitney of New Port Richey was driving his 2017 Toyota Tacoma southbound in the right lane of 49th Street N, approaching 118th Avenue N.
As the deputy slowed down and attempted to clear the intersection, Whitney drove his Toyota into the Tahoe’s passenger side.
Deputies say Whitney complained of a minor injury and was transported to the hospital. He was released shortly after being admitted.
Deputy Whitehurst and his K-9 Devon were not injured in the crash.
Investigators say speed on the part of Whitney was a possible factor in the crash. Whitney was cited for failing to yield to an emergency vehicle.
The investigation is ongoing.
