Lyford, IN : Head-on crash leaves Rockville man seriously injured on Thursday afternoon, July 24, 2014
A Rockville man was air-lifted to an Indianapolis hospital with serious injuries this afternoon following a two-vehicle crash on U.S. 41 north of Lyford.
The Indiana State Police report Steven Bundy, 44, of Rockville, suffered what appeared to be life-threatening injuries after his vehicle was struck head-on by a pickup truck driven by Holly R. Alward, 21, of Marshall, Ind., about 2:30 p.m.
Alward and a passenger in her vehicle suffered what police called minor injuries, and both refused treatment at the scene. Police said an investigation led them believe Alward was distracted by a cell phone when her vehicle crossed the double-yellow center line.
Alward’s Ford F-250 was driving southbound on U.S. 41 about one mile north of Lyford in southern Parke County when her vehicle reportedly crossed the center line and struck Bundy’s northbound Chevrolet 1500, according to ISP. It took rescuers nearly 25 minutes to free Bundy from the wreck, police said. He was taken to Union Hospital in Clinton and then airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.
Bundy was in the emergency room early this evening, and it was too early to classify his condition, a hospital official said. His injuries appeared serious, police said. He was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
Drugs and alcohol did not appear to be a factor, police said.
Bundy was freed from his vehicle by Lyford Fire/Rescue and Clinton City Fire/Rescue. He was taken to Methodist by IU Health air ambulance.
