Tomas Hall Green, 17, of Oak Grove Drive in Hampstead, died Wednesday morning after a hit and run accident on Highway 17. School officials confirmed Green was a junior at Topsail High School.

A passerby called 911 at 6 a.m. to report the incident near Hilltop Grocery, although it is unclear how much time had passed from the time the crash occurred.

Troopers say Green died at the scene.

He had been riding a Razor scooter in the northbound lane of Highway 17 when he was hit. He was found in the median after the collision.

Troopers are not aware of any witnesses to the collision itself, but are going through surveillance video at nearby businesses in an effort to find any clues that would help them understand what happened.

While investigators are not positive the debris is from the crash this morning, they did find pieces of a grill from a 2001-2006 model Chevy full size SUV or pick-up truck. They are asking for people to be on the lookout for a vehicle fitting that description with damage to the driver’s side grill and headlight.

It is not clear why Green was in the roadway, but troopers say he was heading away from the direction of Topsail High School when he was hit.

Highway Patrol says they still have more questions than answers about what happened. If you have any information that may help, contact them right away.
