Elmore, MN : Virginia man injured in a crash on Highway 169 Sunday night, January 24, 2016

A Hibbing man was involved in a crash that sent a Virginia man to the hospital Sunday night.
Kerry M. Whitfield, 41, was driving a 2014 Chevrolet Cruze east on Highway 169 when a 2003 Toyota Tacoma driven by Timothy S. Smith, 34, of Virginia slid on icy blacktop and struck the rear driver’s side of Whitfield’s car, according to a Minnesota State Patrol report. The crash occurred at approximately 11:42 p.m. near milepost 351 on Highway 169.
Smith’s vehicle rolled into the median as a result of over-correcting in an attempt to avoid Whitfield’s car, the report said. Smith suffered non life-threatening injuries and was brought to Essential Health-Virginia Hospital in Virginia. Whitfield and his passenger’s physical conditions were not documented. Zachary T. Sawyer, 26, of Brooklyn Park was in the car with Whitfield at the time of the crash.
All involved were wearing seatbelts and alcohol was not a factor in the crash. Airbags did not deploy. Smith’s truck was totaled as a result of the crash and Whitfield’s car sustained minor damage. The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene.
