Hawesville, KY : 2 dead after a semi and passenger vehicle collided on U.S. 60 in Hancock County on Monday morning, March 27, 2017

Officials say two people are dead after a semi and passenger vehicle collided on U.S. 60 near Hawesville in Hancock County on Monday morning.

Hancock County Sheriff Dale Bozarth said his office will release the victim's names when deputies have notified the next of kin.

According to Bozarth, a caller reported that a semi that had run off U.S. 60 near Kentucky 3199 shortly before 10:30 a.m. When paramedics arrived, they discovered that a passenger car had been involved in the crash as well.

A preliminary investigation revealed that David Padget, of Flaherty, was traveling east on U.S. 60 in a tractor-trailer when a small, white passenger car spun out in front of his truck at Kentucky 3199. The semi struck the passenger vehicle on its side and both vehicles veered to the north shoulder of U.S. 60. Bozarth said Padget's truck cleared a short ditch before coming to a rest.

The impact, he said, pinned Padget inside, and first responders used a hydraulic rescue device to remove him. His injuries, however, appeared minor and he was later treated at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital and released..

The the driver and passenger in the car, however, were both nonresponsive when paramedics arrived. The passenger appeared not to have been wearing a seat belt, and was ejected during the collision, Bozarth said.

It's unclear at this point, Bozarth said, from where the passenger vehicle had been traveling. One witness behind the truck claimed to have seen the vehicle turn onto U.S. 60 from a side road, but Padget told investigators that he witnessed the vehicle traveling westbound on U.S. 60 before the collision. Another semi had passed the vehicle, he said, and it appeared to lose control directly afterward.

Bozarth said water on the road could have contributed to the collision.
