Westford, MA : Lowell man seriously injured in I-495 crash on Friday, December 30, 2016
A 31-year-old Lowell man was seriously injured when the car he was driving slid off of Interstate 495 south into a ditch, trapping him inside, state police said.
The crash occurred around 8:25 p.m. just south of Exit 32, according to state police Sgt. Tom Ryan.
Ryan said Westford firefighters extricated the man from the car and loaded him onto a MedFlight helicopter for transport to Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston for treatment.
The highway was shut down briefly during the MedFlight's landing and takeoff, and traffic remained slow through the area for more than an hour afterward. The front hood of the man's 2005 Nissan Murano was crumpled during the crash.
Ryan said the driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle and that the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Westford police also assisted at the scene.
