Medford, OR : Phoenix man died in motorcycle crash at The Expo Wednesday, May 18, 2016
A 49-year-old man who died Tuesday after a car hit his motorcycle near the Jackson County Expo was identified Thursday as Phoenix resident Dave Eugene Chappell.
The Jackson County Sheriff's Department said Chappell was pulling out of a driveway at The Expo around 3:25 p.m. when a 2002 Hyundai Elantra driving north struck him. Investigators said the motorist apparently tried to swerve, but Chappell drove directly into the vehicle's path.
An officer from Medford police was first on scene and administered CPR. Chappell was taken to Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center, where he died from his injuries a short time later. Police closed Peninger Road in both directions for about 90 minutes during the initial investigation.
Investigators declined to release the Hyundai driver's name, saying no citations have been issued and no arrests have been made.
When the investigation is complete, the sheriff's department said the case will be forwarded to the Jackson County District Attorney's Office for review, a standard procedure in fatal vehicle crashes.
