St. Joseph, MN : 5-year-old Cody James Nuckolls died in a hit-and-run accident on the 300 block of 1st Avenue NW on Monday, April 13, 2015

St. Joseph police say they have found and interviewed the driver of a SUV believed to have hit and killed a 5-year-boy Monday.

Cody James Nuckolls was hit about 2:33 p.m. on a private road in front of his family's home on First Avenue Northwest. He died at St. Cloud Hospital, police said.

Police say the boy and his mother, Lorraine Hipp, were outside waiting for his 7-year-sister to get off a school bus.

His mother crossed First Avenue Northwest to wait for the bus while Cody waited near home. When the bus came to a stop, it blocked the mother's view of her son and the home. Hipp heard her son yell out, so she went back across the road and saw her son fall to the pavement. She did not see any moving vehicles, police said.

When she saw him, she believed he had fallen and was experiencing an unknown medical issue.
His parents took him to CentraCare Plaza in St. Cloud. He was then transported by ambulance to St. Cloud Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators reviewed the bus video and interviewed children on the bus. That led them to a black Chevrolet Trailblazer. The bus was not involved in the incident, and no children on it were in danger, police said.

Police plan to get a search warrant for the SUV. The driver has been interviewed and is cooperating, police said. Police are not naming the driver other than to say the driver lives in the area.

The Ramsey County Medical Examiner Office is conducting an autopsy.
Money is being raised to help pay for the boy's funeral.
