Gadsden, AL : Hokes Bluff man injured in crash on U.S. Highway 278 East Saturday, August 6, 2016
A Hokes Bluff man was injured Saturday when he was ejected from his truck in a crash on U.S. Highway 278 East, according to Hokes Bluff Police Lt. Richard Garmon.
Thomas Day, 22, was taken by helicopter to UAB Hospital, where he reportedly was in stable condition Monday.
The crash occurred at 4:05 p.m. Saturday, in the area of Jack’s Hamburgers. According to police, the preliminary investigation indicated a 22-year-old Hokes Bluff woman in a white Kia Spectra was exiting the parking lot of Jack’s with the intention of turning left onto U.S. 278 East. The Kia struck the passenger side of a black Chevrolet Silverado, driven by Day, causing the truck to turn sideways and enter the median.
The truck overturned multiple times, ejecting Day into the eastbound lanes of traffic. Because of his injuries, a helicopter landed on U.S. 278 to transport him to the hospital.
The driver of the Kia was taken to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries and later released.
The crash closed all lanes of U.S. 278 for about 30 minutes. Traffic then was routed onto one side of the highway, with one lane running in each direction, for about 45 minutes while crews worked to clear the scene.
Hokes Bluff police continue to investigate the crash, reviewing witness statements and video evidence. According to a press release, authorities believe excessive speed was a factor in the crash.
No charges have been filed, Garmon said, and none are expected at this time.
Hokes Bluff police thanked the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office, Glencoe police, Hokes Bluff and Glencoe fire departments and Life Saver helicopter for their assistance at the crash scene.
