WESTPORT, MA : New Bedford woman, 23, among three killed in I-195 crash on Wednesday, 28th September 2016

A 23-year-old New Bedford woman was among the three people killed Wednesday morning in a multi-vehicle crash on I-195 in Westport that sent five others to area hospitals, police said.

The woman, whose name had not been released as of Wednesday night, was in a 2007 BMW 328i that was struck head-on by a 2005 Dodge Caravan livery vehicle shortly after 8 a.m., according to Massachusetts State Police.

Two occupants of the livery vehicle also were killed. Details about those victims and the company that owns the livery vehicle were not immediately available, pending family notifications.

A third occupant of the livery vehicle was taken to Rhode Island Hospital. That person’s name and condition was not immediately available.

The livery vehicle was traveling west on the interstate when it crossed the median and struck the BMW, which was traveling east in the left-hand lane. Two other occupants of the struck vehicle, a 25-year-old Fall River man and a male toddler, were injured. The man was taken to Rhode Island Hospital and the child was taken to Hasbro Children’s Hospital.

Their identities and conditions were not immediately available.

The livery vehicle rolled over after the initial impact with the BMW, State Police said. Initial investigations indicated that a 2008 Subaru Outback traveling east then struck the BMW and caught fire.

The driver of the Subaru, a 27-year-old Vermont man, was transported to Rhode Island Hospital with minor injuries, State Police said.

Two other eastbound vehicles also suffered minor damage from impacts after the initial crash, State Police said. A 2001 Audi A4 operated by a 34-year-old Fall River man was struck by the livery vehicle. He was taken to Rhode Island Hospital with minor injuries, State Police said.

A Chevrolet Suburban operated by a 73-year-old Fall River man also was damaged, when it collided with one of the vehicles.

The accident was reported at 8:12 a.m. Wednesday and obstructed travel on the interstate for several hours.
