Wells, ME : 11-month-old infant killed, and four others injured when their car crashed into the guardrail on the Maine Turnpike in Wells on Monday, May 2, 2016
An 11-month-old baby girl died Monday afternoon when the car in which she was a passenger crashed on the Maine Turnpike.
The infant, Reece Degen, suffered fatal head injuries in the single-vehicle crash, and died shortly after her arrival at York Hospital, according to Maine Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland. Reece was secured in a child safety seat in the back seat of the sedan.
Those injured included the child’s mother, passenger Brianna Degen, 21; the driver, Alyssa Cray, 22; and Cray’s two children, Alexandria, 3, and Connor, 4 months.
All are of Sanford.
McCausland said all four were taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland. The two women had multiple injuries, while the injuries of the two surviving children were considered minor. Connor was secured in a child safety seat, while Alexandria was wearing a seatbelt.
The crash took place around 4 p.m. in heavy rain, when Cray lost control of the car. It struck guardrails before coming to rest along the tree line beside the high- way, McCausland said in a statement. Cray was headed south on the turnpike when the crash occurred.
Maine State Police are continuing their investigation into the cause of the crash.
One of the three southbound lanes was closed to traffic for a period late Monday afternoon.
