A mother and son were killed in a crash on Interstate 65 in Franklin after stopping to help a driver who had crashed.
The pair stopped to help when they saw an SUV hit a patch of black ice and roll over near the exit for Highway 96 just after 9 p.m. Monday.
As they got out of their vehicle, both of them were struck and killed by a semi truck, according to the Franklin Police Department.
The child died at the scene, and his mother was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Five people were in the SUV that overturned, and two of them were critically hurt. The other three were not injured.
Sgt. Charles Warner issued this statement, "Travel remains extremely dangerous, and we cannot stress enough the need for people to stay off of the roads until conditions dramatically improve, which will not likely be anytime soon."
