San Jose, CA : Man Driving Mercedes About 100 MPH Killed After Striking Another Car On I-880 In San Jose on Sunday night, September 21, 2014
A man was killed when his speeding Mercedes rear-ended a car on Interstate 880 late Sunday night, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Luckily, the San Jose family in the Honda CRV he hit, including a 1-year-old child, escaped serious injury even after the impact caused their vehicle to roll onto its side in the middle of the freeway.
The collision was reported at 10:08 p.m. in the southbound lanes near The Alameda offramp. Witnesses told the CHP that the Mercedes sedan was traveling around 100 mph when it hit the rear of the Honda and went off the right shoulder and into a dirt embankment.
The Mercedes driver was thrown from his car when it hit the embankment, the CHP said. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and his identity has not been released pending notification of his next of kin.
The three people inside the Honda, a 44-year-old man, 41-year-old woman and 1-year-old girl, all from San Jose, were taken to Valley Medical Center for complaints of pain but were otherwise uninjured, the CHP said.
An investigation into the deadly collision is ongoing. The CHP said they have not ruled out alcohol as a factor.
