Port Charlotte,FL : Teen hospitalized after getting hit by car while on his bike on November, Thursday 16th 2017

A 13-year-old Charlotte County boy is in critical condition after he was hit while riding his bicycle.

Dylan Rose was on Dorchester Street heading north when Florida Highway Patrol reported Joshua Salazar, 80, hit the teen from behind.

Neighbors ran outside when they heard the crash happen.

While one neighbor called 911, others began offering aid to Rose at the direction of 911 operators.

Stephen Stroman said Rose had bruising on his back immediately that he noticed, but he assisted in putting him on his back.

Stroman said the child was struggling to breathe normally. According to neighbors, other medical professionals driving through also stopped to begin assisting the teen while they waited for an ambulance.

The child was transported to Bayfront Hospital by a medical helicopter according to witnesses.

Residents living nearby said it’s a dangerous road overall.

“It’s a sad case, but I definitely see how someone could get hit on a bike out there,” Jordan Washington said. “It’s too dark.”

Washington lives down the road from Dorchester Street and said he has seen drivers go all different speeds on the 30 mile-an-hour road, adding to the problems.

“They need speed bumps or something honestly,” he said.

“We took out big rubber trees so that you could see,” neighbor Patty Kelly said.

She and her husband Ray, along with their dog Rocky, live right on Dorchester Street.

“Sometimes people were just coming down [the road] so fast,” she said.

The narrow road gives little room for pedestrians or bicyclists to get out of the way.

“The road really isn’t wide enough,” Kelly said. “It should have a bike path or something.”

Her husband said he refuses to take their dog Rocky for walks along Dorchester at all.
