Orlando, FL : 37-year-old Casselberry man killed in a crash in Orange County early Saturday, December 12, 2015
A 37-year-old Casselberry man was killed early Saturday in a crash in Orange County, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
Mathew Mercado, 22, of Casselberry, and his passenger, Marcos Maldanado, 20, of Orlando, were traveling eastbound on East Colonial Drive shortly after 3:30 a.m.
As Mercado crossed North Semoran Boulevard, his car struck a car being driven by Omar Diaz, said FHP Sgt. Kim Montes.
The collision killed Diaz and caused Mercado’s car to briefly catch fire, Montes said.
Diaz’s wife, Amalia Gomez, 47, and Mercado were both brought to Florida Hospital East Orlando to be treated for minor injuries. Maldanado wasn’t injured.
Troopers aren’t sure which vehicle ran a red light, Montes said.
Mercado’s blood was drawn to determine if he was under the influence of alcohol during the collision, investigators said.
The crash remains under investigation, but Montes said charges are pending.
