Bellaire, MI : Newaygo man killed in Mecosta County crash on Wednesday, February 22, 2017

Authorities say an elderly Newaygo man likely suffered a medical emergency before leaving the highway and striking a tree in Mecosta County on Wednesday.

James Howard Kellogg, 88, was driving north on US-131 near Jefferson Road in Aetna Township just before 5 p.m. when he drove off the roadway, into the median, up an embankment and into a large tree, troopers from the Mt. Pleasant post of the Michigan State Police said in a press release.

“Investigators believe that Mr. Kellogg had an emergency medical event prior to the crash,” they said.

Kellogg was later pronounced dead at Spectrum Hospital in Big Rapids, troopers said.
